Flying At Last

Hello All,

After some terrible weekend weather before christmas and possibly the wettest and windiest January on record, hopefully we will be getting some decent weather again, so the flying can really start again. We had a few new members come and start last term and really enjoyed it. We even had a couple of our lucky members getting to 8000ft in wave one sunny wednesday afternoon in November. Even though it is still cold, there is some good weather to be had and it is a good time to learn all those launches and landings that are a bit of a necessity!

We will start organising Wednesday trips as well as weekend ones as often as we can to take advantage of any good weather we’ll get this term.

Sorry for not being in touch sooner. Any questions or queries please feel free to contact us on gliding@yusu.org or ljm503@york.ac.uk

Hope to soar with you soon!

Laura

Welcome to YUGC!

Hello to all, whether you’re new to this website, new to York, or just returning hoping that we have finally updated our website! Well now we have and you have something new to read!

Well, welcome to the York University Gliding Club, clearly the place for thrill-seekers to come. Let me tell you a bit about us…

I’m Laura and I run the club with the help of my friends on the commitee, and we have just relaunched ourselves again this year. We fly at the York Gliding Centre at Rufforth Aerodrome in Rufforth about 7 miles by car from Uni. Rufforth is a medium-sized club, situated nicely in the Vale of York, west of York city centre. Their friendliness, the fleet of gliders and the experienced instructors make it a pleasure to learn how to fly here.

Myself and my commitee are all enthusiastic flying members with varying levels of experience, so it doesn’t matter if you’re looking to become an instructor or if you’re a complete beginner, you won’t be alone, and will always have someone to talk to and share your experiences of whatever flying you have or haven’t done!

Gliding is probably the cheapest way of learning how to fly (and in my opinion the best way!) Every flight you take you learn something new, and there’s such a sense of achievement with every flight you take, and it’s an experience like no other. You’ll have loads of fun, and be doing something that not many other people do.

So achieve something else besides your degree, come and join us and learn how to fly! We’ll be in the Sports Centre at the Freshers’ Fair on Saturday Week 1 (13th Oct), come and visit us and talk to us about gliding, or if you can’t wait that long email me at ljm503@york.ac.uk, with any questions you might have.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Gliding Opportunities!

Hello all,

There are some really exciting gliding opportunities available in 2007, so expect lots of emails.

First of all as the weather for this weekend is rather dire, I have high hopes for next week.  The short daylight hours are not doing us any favours at the moment, but I hope to get up to the club next Sunday (21st).  Do please reply to this email if you would like to join me.  Don’t worry if you haven’t flown before.
Manchester University Gliding Club have invited us to join them at the YGC for a big inter-uni social on the 27th.  On offer is a dinner cooked by the YGC for a modest fee, and the chance of a whole day’s gliding and a whole night’s partying.
Further in the future, there is the chance to join an inter-uni expedition to Portmoak (Scottish Gliding Club near Edinburgh with world class wave soaring) at Easter.  I will let you know the dates but if anyone who is potentially interested could let me know, that would be fab.  Portmoak is really one of the premier soaring clubs in the UK, and I’m very excited about this chance to go with a lot of students for a week’s fun and flying.
Even further in the future there is a plan afoot to organise a week’s flying in the summer somewhere in Europe, probably the Czech Republic.  Do let me know if you have any ideas.

Hope to hear from you all soon,
Alex May.
